Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is an arm and conditions that causes tingling, weakness numbness and other symptoms. It is caused by an excessive pressure on the median nerve, the central nerve in your wrist.   • Some lifestyle factors that can increase the Risk for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome include high BMI (body mass index), high salt intake, smoking and sedentary lifestyle
  • Family history
  • Certain injuries to the wrist
  • Jobs factor that involve wrist movement include assembly line work, manufacturing, construction work and keyboarding occupations. Persons employed in these occupations can be at higher risk of developing CTS
  • Pregnant women can be more susceptible to develop carpal tunnel syndrome due to hormonal changes & a build of fluid, mainly during the last few months

To help prevent CTS:

  • Keep your hand, arm and finger muscles flexible and strong
  • Use correct posture
  • Stop any activity that you think can be causing hand, finger or pain or wrist numbness
  • Use wrist & hand movements that spread the pressure & motion evenly throughout your wrist and hand. For ex, keep your wrists straight or only slightly bent. Avoid activities that twist or bend the wrists for long time.
  • Switch hands & change positions frequently when you’re doing repeated motions. Take rest and breaks your hands.
  • Wear a wrist splint when you can’t control the wrist motion such as while sleeping. A splint can keep your wrist in a neutral position.
  • Preventing conditions such as arthritis, high blood pressure and diabetes decrease your risk for developing CTS.
  • Take good care of your health. This includes maintaining at a healthy weight, not smoking and getting daily exercise.
