SpaceX rocket successfully returns to Earth after putting satellites into orbit
People living along the central Atlantic coast of Florida have for decades enjoyed the show of rockets headed for space. On Monday night they were treated to a new sight that may become common: a rocket coming back down to a gentle landing.
SpaceX launched Falcon 9 to carry 11 satellites into orbit & then managed to return the booster back to Earth successfully. The rocket lifted off yesterday December 21 from Cape Canaveral Florida. A few minutes after the launch, the 15-story first stage of rocket – which gives it the power to takeoff broke off and began its return to Earth, while the second stage maintained the propulsion of the satellites into space.
SpaceX marked a new era of space technology not did they manage to simultaneously put 11 satellites into orbit, they also successfully landed the booster back to Earth. The achievement marks the triumphant comeback of SpaceX since June 28, when another unmanned Falcon 9 rocket carrying cargo to the International Space Station, exploded minutes after lift-off. Its revolutionary moment Musk told reporters after the landing. No one has ever brought a booster, an orbital-class booster, back intact. With the successful return of its booster, SpaceX opens up the possibility to drastically reduce the overall cost of a space mission, as they will be able to reuse it. Until then, satellite -launching rockets had the downside of not being reusable: each launch required the construction of a brand new rocket.
